Port Perry Ontario

Port Perry Ontario is a small town with some memorable attractions, such as boat cruises on Lake Scugog and the Great Blue Heron Casino, which is just outside town on Scugog Island.

Summer brings the visitors to Port Perry where the lake breezes provide cooling -- and messing about on the lake provides fun.

Shopping has long been a big draw to Port Perry because its main street has retained its olde worlde charm and the shops reflect that with country products.

As well, Port Perry has been used for movie-making over the past twenty years, standing in for American towns on many occasions.

Port Perry Ontario -- Woodman Cruise Boat

If you aren't a sailor yourself, you can still enjoy a day out on the water courtesy of the Woodman, a modern cruise boat in traditional style.

The Woodman does a variety of regular and special event cruises throughout the warmer months and, with its indoor and outdoor seating, a restaurant and bar, it has everything needed for a pleasurable trip. Scugog isn't a big lake so the cruises generally last around 2 hours, longer if its a special event.

Canoes for rent at Port Perry Ontario

If you're comfortable on the water, you can rent boats (pedal or motor) and canoes for exploring the lake or fishing, whatever you wish. You don't have to take a boat out to fish. Fishing from the dock and surrounding lakeshore park is a popular pastime too.

And you can bring and launch your own boat at various points around the lake also.

British Classic Car Show at Port Perry Ontario

Port Perry Ontario has an annual classic car show, held in August, called 'Brits on the Lake', which features British cars and motorbikes. This is a big event with all types of cars and bikes represented. if you've a favourite old British machine, this is the place to show it, or come see some fine classic cars.

If you like car shows, you may want to take in this one at Orillia.

Settlement House on Queen Street in Port Perry Ontario

It's quaint 'old Ontario' main street, Queen St, is a shopper's mecca with clothes and accessories making up the greater part of the stores and all with an upmarket Canadian slant. Some of the stores don't just look old, they really are old. Brock's, for example (but not in photo), has been going in its present location on Queen St for about 100 years, the firm is much older than that, and it's still one of the busiest shops you'll find anywhere.

Used book stores of various kinds are popular. My favourite is one specializing in militaria - the Grenadier. This shop has a collection of old history books, toy soldiers and old uniforms that are fun to browse.

Any time is good for a visit but 'Moonlight Madness', held in June each year is especially good. Romantic moonlight on the lake and the historical buildings and shopping until the wee hours. What could be better?

Pickup Hockey on Lake Scugog. Port Perry Ontario

Restaurants with a Canadian country theme, are a big part of Port Perry's shopping attraction. Chocolate and ice cream makes up a 'healthy' share of these stores because, after all, this is a town that caters for its visitors desires.

In September, Port Perry has a food-based event called the 'Harvest Chilli Cook-off' with booths all along main street providing chilli for tasting.

The Christmas season starts in November with two events, the annual Candlelight Walk and Tree Lighting ceremony and, later, the Santa Claus Parade. Both wonderful events to tie into your Xmas shopping day out at Port Perry. And when the lake freezes, you can join in a hockey game.

Snowmobile racing on Lake Scugog, Port Perry Ontario

But it isn't only in summer that Port Perry Ontario has attractions to offer. Once the lake freezes, it's busy with ice fishing huts, snowmobiles, impromptu hockey and ringette games, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and just plain old walking, as well as organized events such as ice-bike races.

Shopping still goes on in winter. This isn't a town that closes for the season; it's pretty busy all year. And this is where the cafes really come into their own. Ice cream sales may be down but hot chocolate and lattes are just what we all need to keep out the chill.

The Great Blue Heron Casino is located on Scugog Island, about 15 minutes out of town on Scugog Island. Here you'll find over 500 slots and 60 table games as well as two restaurants, one an all-you-can-eat buffet, and two bars. For other Ontario casinos, visit our page here. Port Perry Ontario is in the heart of Durham Region and is a good example of the many attractive places Durham has to offer.
