Our Toronto Sun newspaper page provides background and a link to Toronto's tabloid daily paper webpage. The Sun is a paper that gives a quick overview of what's going on in Canada and abroad without the analysis and comment you get in the broadsheets. Links to our pages on the other two major papers are at the bottom of this page.
Why have pages on local newspapers for visitors? There are two main reasons.
The first is, if you stay in an upmarket hotel you're generally provided a free morning paper and our pages will help you choose the one that best suits your tastes.
And the second is, if you're staying in Ontario for some time you'll want to know what's going on in the world or maybe just back home in your own country. Picking the right newspaper will help you with both these.
The Sun is the 'small paper that grew'. Started in 1971 from the remains of a paper that went out of business, the Sun took its model (and name) from the new British tabloid papers just then coming to prominence in the world of journalism.
The Sun carries all the features of a tabloid, a small size that's easy to manage on the commuter ride into town, small articles written in a breezy, conversational style, and right-of-centre politics. Oh and a bikini-clad girl, the 'Sunshine Girl' in every issue.
It's a quick read, which will get you up-to-date and out enjoying your vacation quicker than any of the other papers -- if you don't mind the Sun's in-your-face 'style'.
That said, and in keeping with its popular style, the Sun is where you'll find information on entertainment, shopping, events, and 'deals' in Toronto -- and it mainly is Toronto rather than Ontario or Canada -- so it is a good choice for visitors.
It's not, however, where you're likely to find a lot of in-depth coverage of international news so if that's what you're after try the two broadsheets, Globe and Star below.
