Waterfront Festival: An Ontario Summer Event
A Waterfront Festival, the celebration of ports and beaches,
is a regular summer event for many Ontario cities on lakes,
or even one on a big river, like the Ottawa River.
Festivals are held at Barrie, Belleville, Cobourg, Toronto, Oakville, Mississauga, Burlington, and Pembroke (the one on the Ottawa River).
Festivals include music, theatre, street performers, old-
fashioned midways (or carnivals or fun fairs, depending on
where you come from, they go by so many different local
names), and always lots of different concession stands
selling food, though not usually the sort your nutritionist would recommend.
Cobourg festival is on the Canada day weekend and, along with Cobourg's excellent beach right alongside the harbor, is a great way of spending a summer weekend, see our
Cobourg
page.
Whitby also has a similar festival, called 'Harbour Days', and
held on the last weekend of July. The top attractions here are a nautical 'festival of lights' and a dinner cruise on the tall ship, Empire Sandy.
Toronto's festival, generally held mid-July, also includes tall ships, see our
Sail Past
page for the 2010 festival visitors.
Being a sophisticated sort of place, Toronto has more sophisticated attractions than your everyday funfair, like this 'human statue', and the upscale restaurants and cafes of Queen's Quay.
